Denture Don’ts: 5 Things You Should Avoid to Make Your Restoration Last

According to the American College of Prosthodontists, roughly 40 million Americans are missing all of their teeth. So, it’s safe to say that tooth loss is a prevalent concern! Fortunately, replacing a large number of missing teeth is easy thanks to dentures. This modern restoration is custom-made for each patient, is crafted from only the best materials, and can last for a decade or more with proper care. To ensure yours last, do your best to avoid the habits below.

1. Not Brushing for Two Full Minutes

In order to keep your denture and any remaining teeth you have in pristine condition, you need to brush them for two full minutes each morning and evening. It’s important that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a dentist-recommended toothpaste as well (regular toothpaste contains abrasive ingredients that can scratch your dentures).

2. Using Superglue on Small Breaks

If a small crack surfaces on your dentures, do not use superglue to try and remedy the situation. After all, although it’s a powerful adhesive, it contains toxins that are not safe to ingest. The best thing to do if you find yourself in this situation is to call your dentist so they can schedule a time to repair or replace it.

3. Not Rinsing with Mouthwash Consistently

Rinsing with an ADA-approved, anti-microbial mouthwash helps prevent plaque build-up, remove bacteria, and keep your breath minty-fresh. So, if you haven’t already, incorporate it into your daily oral hygiene routine. If you’re not sure which one to use, don’t hesitate to ask your dentist!

4. Skipping Dental Checkups and Cleanings

There’s a common misconception that patients who don’t have any of their natural teeth left no longer need to schedule a dental checkup and cleaning every six months. That’s not the case! Remember, these visits are also designed to catch oral cancer, gum disease, and other serious oral health issues early on.

5. Wearing Dentures to Bed

When you first get your dentures, your dentist may ask you to wear them around the clock. After the initial adjustment period, however, you should get in the habit of taking them out at night. That way, your gums have a chance to rest and you’re less likely to develop sores or pneumonia.
