Someone who is getting veneers

Veneers are one of the most powerful cosmetic dental treatments that there is. They’re capable of giving you a brand-new smile, one that you can wear with pride everywhere that you go. In fact, after wearing them for a while, you might not even remember what it was like not to have them.

However, as with any kind of dental work, veneers aren’t going to last forever. Eventually your veneers will need to be replaced if you want to keep your smile in good condition—here are some signs that it could be time for that to happen.

What Are Some Signs That Veneers Need to Be Replaced?

While everyone is different and the lifespan of your veneers depends on a variety of factors, the average set of veneers will last for around 10 years. They can last considerably longer than that, buy you should be especially vigilant for signs of failure after that amount of time.

Here are a few things to look out for:

  • Visible damage to your veneers, like chips or cracks.
  • Decay on the teeth underneath the veneers.
  • Emerging gaps between your veneers and your gums
  • Severe discoloration

How to Extend the Lifespan of Your Veneers

Given how incredible veneers can be, you probably want to keep them around for as long as possible. Thankfully there are plenty of ways that you can increase your veneers’ lifespan overall, and most of them are fairly simple:

  • Avoid toothpastes that contain abrasives, as they can potentially scratch up your veneers.
  • Don’t use your teeth to open packages, bottles, or to chew your nails.
  • Avoid tobacco or nicotine products that can leave stains behind on your teeth.
  • Try to stay away from foods and drinks that could stain your teeth, like coffee or dark berries.
  • If you don’t already, be sure to floss thoroughly each day.
  • See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings so that they can check on the integrity of your veneers.
  • If you’re an athlete, you may also want to invest in a high-quality mouthguard.
